Washington Ramblers is an independent walking group which was formed in 1983 organising fortnightly Sunday walks for over 40 years.
Walks are arranged across a wide area from North Yorkshire to the Scottish Borders
Specific walks are compiled by experienced leaders to explore the best walking areas
in this beautiful part of the country.
We aim to support a healthy lifestyle through walking in the great outdoors. We are a welcoming and friendly group so you can make new friends and stay fit and healthy whilst enjoying the beautiful landscapes in the North East of England.
The annual schedule of walks will include moorland and coastal routes along with walks in the pastoral valleys and farmland.
A particular benefit of this group being the use of coach transport from Washington to the walking destinations. This removes the need to arrange car shares and alleviates any concerns around travel to the walk and worries about being able to find appropriate car parking
Walks are arranged fortnightly on Sundays throughout the year.
A wide area will be explored right across the region including walks within the North Yorks Moors,Yorkshire Dales and Northumberland National Parks as well as in the North Pennines and the Durham Dales.
There will usually be 3 grades of walk available to ensure there is something to suit all abilities.
Short walk
About 3 to 5 miles
For the less adventurous, staying closer to the finishing point and where possible avoiding stiles and significant inclines.
Middle Walk
6 to 8 miles
Often the most popular option being long enough to have an enjoyable day while avoiding any necessity to hurry.
Long Walk
10 to 12 miles
Where possible this will be a linear walk with the group walking back to the final destination. It may include slightly more difficult terrain and more ascent
All of the walks will have a competent leader who will know the route and ensure the group stays together, however you remain responsible for your own behaviour and safety.
These are group walks and the pace will be the pace of the group as a whole you are expected to remain with the group for the entire walk.
The schedule of upcoming walks can be found via the link on the home page
It is important for your full enjoyment of the walks to wear appropriate clothing for the outdoors allowing for our changeable weather
A reliably waterproof jacket is recommended.
Sturdy shoes are an option for summer walking, however waterproof boots are advisable for winter walking
A rucksack to carry your packed lunch and any extra clothes
There will be stops for refreshments on the walks so you should bring your preference of hot or cold drinks and a packed lunch.
Remembering also to bring enough liquids to keep you hydrated during the walk.
As we usually end the walk in a village/town there can be the option of visiting a pub or cafe
All trips leave a car park adjacent to Washington Galleries at 9am there is ample free parking.
The coach usually returns between 5.00-6.30pm
The coach costs £20 per trip
To avoid muddy boots on the coach you will need to bring a change of shoes which can be left on the coach
Walk Bookings
All walks need to be booked in advance.
